You saw that which I did to Egypt; and I carried you on the wings of eagles and I brought you to Me —Exodus 19:4

While I always imagined the magnificent eagle, I came across a suggestion online by Dr. Harry Hamburger, an Ophthalmologist in Miami:
“The Hebrew word used in this passage does not translate as eagle but rather a "bird with no feathers on its head." An eagle has feathers on its head which are white! So which bird might this be....most probably a vulture. Vultures are common in the Middle East, and have not a hair on their bald head. Vultures are far lower than eagles in that they only eat rotting carrion. Again, the idea is that the Jews were very low when they left Egypt, and what better bird than the lowly smelly, stinking vulture to carry them. The Jews elevated the vulture spiritually, and the vulture carried them to freedom”.

Inspired, I did some further reading and a popular interpretation of this is indeed that the “Nesher” of the bible is quite likely the Griffon Vulture – Gyps fulvus. It is the largest of Israel's carnivorous birds, its outstretched wings sometimes attaining a span of ten feet! In fact three other kinds of vultures are mentioned as well in the bible – ozniyyah (osprey), peres (bearded vulture) and raḥam (common vulture).

The image of a vulture in the place of an eagle was an exciting visual thought for me. As a wildlife photographer, I have always found vultures to be beautiful (contrary to many opinions!) and strikingly powerful when they are in full flight. I can imagine the vulture’s expansive outstretched wings lovingly sheltering the children of G-d.
