Hahnemühle German Etching Fine Art Print
Signed and Numbered by the Artist
This piece was inspired by the story of my great grandfather, after whom I am named. He had to flee Lithuania in the early 1900s and arrived in Southern Africa, leaving behind Elza, the love of his life. His only possessions – a pair of candlesticks and his violin. Several years later, they were joyfully reunited and married. I imagined the painfully lonely years in between – the separating of families and loved ones for so many Jews during this time.
The background is of Kolmanskop - a desolate abandoned town in the Namibian desert, representing the starkness of both the new land and the loneliness. In the foreground, the shadow of his love is a reminder of the past, the bird represents the hope of the present and in the background, the children they will one day have, run free. A story of love, loss and eventual triumph.
